As part of modern mobility concepts, it is important to consider not only actual trips but also standing vehicles. Currently, residents and commuters park their cars in urban areas, thus taking up valuable urban space. In a recently published paper, Felix Weidinger, together with Nils Boysen (Uni Jena) and Konrad Stephan (Uni Jena), investigates how the layout of parking spaces can be optimized. By a better utilization of space, either more cars can be parked in the same area or urban space that is currently used for parking can be reallocated without losing parking spots. A computational study on a comprehensive real-world dataset shows the potential of the approach. The article appeared in Transportation Science: https://doi.org/10.1287/trsc.2021.1049
