Start dates
New theses at our chair are only assigned on specified dates, which are currently:
- January 7th
- April 1st
- July 1st
- October 1st
If one of these days is a weekend or a public holiday, the date is moved to the following working day.
Application procedure
- Step 1: Take a look at our . open topics
- Step 2: Register for our . moodle course
- Step 3: Select a thesis type (bachelor or master thesis)
- Step 4: Fill in the application form in the moodle course.
After reviewing your application, you will get a feedback on your application at the next starting date (see above). Please note that we receive many inquiries and therefore cannot offer a topic to every applicant.
Different kinds of theses
At the chair for Operation Research, scientific papers can be divided into different categories, depending on the topic and emphasis:
- Literature-based papers: The goal of literature-based papers is to examine and review new publications on current methods used in Operations Research.
- Implementation tasks: Existing solution approaches for optimization problems shall be programmed, or new algorithms shall be developed. Usually, C# or Python are used as the programming language for these tasks.
- Cooperation thesis: A thesis in cooperation with a company can only be supervised if it has a sufficient connection to the subject of Operations Research.

Requirements
In order to write a bachelor thesis at our chair, the following requirement should be met:
- Successful exam in “Operations Research” with a good or very good grade
In order to write an independent research assignment or a master thesis at our chair, one of the following requirements should be met:
- Successful exam in “Warehousing & Delivery Logistics" with a good or very good grade
- Successful participation at a seminar offered by the chair for Management Science / Operations Research with a good or very good grade
